Very Quickly features abbreviated posts for when I don’t have time to write out a full review.
Amy Adams is a treasure, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody at this point, as I have said many times in this blog. But she really does shine, once again, carrying the entire weight of the movie on her shoulders.
The dog metaphor, the entire hook of the movie, is probably the weakest or least relevant part of Nightbitch. It’s partly because the pace of the body horror/metamorphosis sequences is weird -it’s like the progression of her transformation does not quite correlate with the fluctuations of her mental health the way you would expect it to- but it’s also in part because the dramatic exploration of the ravages of motherhood is so powerful and so skillfully written that it would work just as well even without the gimmick.
I’ve seen this compared to Tully, another movie about a recent mother who is left alone to pick up the pieces of her broken self. They would make an interesting, if rough, double feature; I think if I saw them back to back I might find Nightbitch angrier and Tully softer.
Deprisa y corriendo: Canina (2025)
Amy Adams es patrimonio viviente de la humanidad, algo que a estas alturas ya no debería sorprender a nadie, de tanto que lo repito en este blog. Una vez más da un recital de interpretación en una película que lleva enteramente a sus espaldas.
La metáfora canina, que viene a ser la originalidad de la peli, es seguramente su elemento más débil o menos relevante. En parte es porque el ritmo de las secuencias de metamorfosis queda raro (es como si el avance de su transformación no encajara del todo con sus crisis de salud mental) pero en parte también es porque la exploración dramática de los estragos de la maternidad es tan potente y está tan bien escrito que funcionaría igual de bien sin el lado fantástico.
Leí a alguien comparar Canina con Tully, otra película sobre una madre primeriza a la que dejan sola entre las ruinas de la persona que una vez fue. Harían una sesión doble de lo más interesante, si bien dura de ver; creo que si la viera juntas pensaría que Canina desprende más furia donde Tully busca compasión.
