A Star is Born is an unabashedly romantic look at music and stardom, and an amazing display of talent from its stars, Bradley Cooper (who also directs) and Lady Gaga. Both offer incredible musical and dramatic performances, and their chemistry pulls the film together.
Cooper plays Jackson Maine, a famous country singer who was a legend but is now addicted to alcohol and pills, losing his hearing, and forced to combine proper concert tours with corporate gigs and publicity to keep paying the bills. One night he meets Lady Gaga’s Ally, a waitress who sings La vie en rose at a bar. The attraction between the two is immediate and inextricable from their mutual respect as musicians. He recognizes her talent and wants to share it with the world; she isn’t starstruck, she sees the songwriter in him and not the celebrity. With her he finds new motivation to carry on with a tour that was by now routine; she will reinvigorate his career as he kickstarts hers.
The sequence where Jackson convinces Ally to go onstage for the first time to sing Shallow is electrifying, alone worth watching the movie for. When she hesitantly walks up to the microphone and starts singing, her voice slowly growing stronger and more confident, her nerves mixed with excitement are infectious. The camera stays stubbornly fixed on her face, close up, because that’s where we need to be. The sound of the crowd going wild is all we need to know about what’s going on in front. Even though I of course knew that Lady Gaga has a prodigious voice, I still saw only Ally in that moment, and felt transported when she finally gave in to the song. Cooper rightly lets the song play in its entirety, a scene in and of itself.
This scene will rightly take its place as one of the great story and song moments of musical film. My only disappointment is for people who will first hear the song outside of the film, because it is the movie’s single most pivotal composition and you should experience it right there on the stage with them. After this, when Ally is signed on to a label, it feels only natural and her path to success seems inevitable.
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga are instantly believable as a couple; they have developed an easy rapport that grounds their every interaction. Sam Elliott shines here too, in a brief but significant role as Jack’s older brother, where his usual stoicism is deployed in the most touching way.
The movie, otherwise engaging, does lag a bit in the middle, especially when Ally’s career takes a markedly pop turn (this is the only point in which Ally begins to resemble Lady Gaga’s real-life stage persona), with skimpy shiny dresses and backup dancers, that is met with Jack’s disapproval. It is clear to us, having got to know Jack, why he would reject that style, but the movie surprisingly does not reveal why Ally adopts it. We don’t see whether she only does it because it’s what her management tells her to do or whether she simply enjoys that style as much as her singer-songwriter style. By neglecting to give us her perspective, it felt like the movie endorses Jack’s disapproval, which feels mean to Ally and to pop stars like Lady Gaga herself.
Outside of this misstep, though, A Star is Born is a success because it always looks at Jack and Ally as equals, in terms of significance and emotion, even though there is a clear and enormous power differential between a famous country star and a struggling waitress. In everything that matters, the protagonists are on equal footing, and Cooper smartly never goes into the easy “I gave you everything” drama; the film delves instead into alcoholism and the cruel swings of fame. It is not a new story, but it feels timeless when it is told with talent and emotion.

Bradley Cooper y Lady Gaga forman una pareja inmediatamente creíble; han desarrollado una complicidad que une todas sus interacciones. Sam Elliott interviene también en un papel breve pero remarcable como el hermano mayor de Jack, donde su estoicismo natural se enarbola de la fora más conmovedora.
La película, por lo demás entretenida, se ralentiza hacia la mitad, especialmente cuando la carrera de Ally da un giro marcadamente pop (este es el único punto en el que Ally empieza a parecerse al personaje de Lady Gaga en la vida real), con vestidos cortos y bailarinas, lo que provoca la desaprobación de Jack. Habiéndolo conocido, es evidente para nosotros por qué rechazaría ese estilo, pero choca que la película no desvele por qué Ally lo adopta. No vemos si lo hace solo porque su manager se lo ordena o si sencillamente le gusta ese estilo tanto como el de cantautora. Aparte de este traspiés, por lo demás, Ha nacido una estrella es un éxito porque siempre ve a Jack y Ally como iguales, en lo que respecta a la importancia y la emoción, a pesar de que haya una clara y enorme diferencia de poder entre una estrella del country y una camarera que vive con su padre. En lo que importa, ambos protagonistas tienen la misma autoridad, y Cooper nunca cae en el drama fácil de “Yo te lo di todo”; en su lugar, la película trata del alcoholismo y de los crueles vaivenes de la fama. No es una historia nueva, pero parece eterna cuando se cuenta con talento y emoción.
