Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen is a fantastic documentary about trans representation in film and TV. It is carried mostly by interviews with an impressive line-up of trans writers, actors and directors, and their testimony is supported by archival footage that goes from the early 20th century to last year.
The intent of this documentary isn’t exactly historical, teaching us where and how trans people have been depicted on screen -although it definitely does that too. It is more analytical, or critical, breaking down what parts of that representation are inaccurate or hurtful, and which roles or movies have a positive impact. On paper this might sound easy, but the research work that has gone into this production is downright scholarly: they have combed hundreds of films and episodes of TV to put together montages of themes, tropes or characters, including the highest-profile movies we’ve all seen but also obscure one-off scenes in otherwise unrelated shows.
The selected excerpts and examples cover a wide array of topics that are relevant for the trans experience as it is played on TV. There’s the recurring depiction of trans women as prostitutes, which never touches upon the fact that most trans people who resort to sex work do so because it is impossible for them to get better jobs or access a support network; there’s the disproportionate focus on trans women over trans men, because like all women, they are commodified; there’s the scrutiny over surgery and genitals, or the myths around hormonal treatments; there’s the well-intentioned dramas where cis creatives and cis actors pretend to denounce transphobic violence, while perpetuating the association of trans people as victims of crime. The gamut of trans representation runs from open hostility, to mockery, to -at best- benevolent but exclusive obliviousness, with only very recent works made by and with trans people, like the great Pose and Sense8.
As expertly curated as the material is, though, I can easily imagine the Hollywood version of this piece where the people interviewed about trans characters were the cis authors who wrote them; it is of the essence that Disclosure talks to trans people, and trans people only, about what popular culture has meant for them. It is illuminating to listen to people like Laverne Cox or Lana Wachowski about why movies that cis people consider benevolent can instead be harmful, and why characters that are barely relevant within the whole of a show can be a lifeline for a trans kid seeing themselves for the first time. The film analysis is erudite, but what makes each commentary so powerful is the emotional impact of each person: we can talk for hours about how stories are crafted, but you cannot argue with a person who’s telling you about the one movie that changed their life in their teenage years; whatever else you may think, that moment is true, and its power is contagious.
Disclosure is an enriching and moving experience, and its merit resides in what should be an evident truth: if you want to know whether a work of fiction is good representation, talk to the people it purports to represent.

Disclosure: Ser trans en Hollywood es un fantástico documental sobre la representación trans en el cine y la televisión. Se basa principalmente en entrevistas con una nutrida galería de actores, directores y guionistas trans, cuyo testimonio se apoya en metraje de archivo que va desde principios del siglo XX hasta el año pasado.
El propósito de este documental no es estrictamente histórico, explicarnos cuándo y cómo se ha representado a las personas trans en pantalla (aunque desde luego lo hace). Es analítico, o crítico, destinado a conversar sobre qué partes de la representación son incorrectas o dañinas, y qué películas o personajes han tenido un impacto positivo. De primeras puede sonar fácil, pero el trabajo de investigación que han llevado a cabo para esta producción es casi académico: han peinado cientos de películas y episodios de televisión para montar ejemplos de temas, arquetipos o personajes, entre ellos los grandes éxitos que todos conocemos pero también escenas sueltas de programas americanos por lo demás desconocidos.
Los extractos seleccionados cubren un amplio abanico de temas relacionados con la experiencia trans tal y como se representa en la televisión. Está la representación recurrente de mujeres trans como prostitutas, que nunca se detiene en el hecho de que la mayoría de personas trans que recurren al trabajo sexual lo hace porque es incapaz de conseguir trabajos mejores o acceder a sistemas de apoyo; está el énfasis desproporcionado en las mujeres trans antes que en los hombres trans, porque como todas las mujeres, se las ve como un objeto; están la obsesión con la cirugía y los genitales o los mitos sobre el tratamiento hormonal; están los dramas bienintencionados con los que creadores y actores cis afirman denunciar la violencia tránsfoba, perpetuando la asociación de personas trans como víctimas de crímenes. El abanico de la representación trans va de la hostilidad desnuda, pasando por la burla, hasta (en el mejor de los casos) una benévola ignorancia, con solo unos pocos casos muy recientes (como Pose o Sense8) de series realizadas por y con voces trans.
Aun así, a pesar de lo bien seleccionado que está el material, no me cuesta nada imaginar una versión Hollywood de este documental en el que las personas que hablaran de estos personajes trans fueran los autores cis que los escribieron; es una parte esencial de Disclosure que quienes hablan son personas trans, y solo ellas, narrando sus propias experiencias. Es esclarecedor oír hablar a gente como Laverne Cox o Lana Wachowski de por qué una película que consideramos positiva puede ser dañina, o de por qué un personaje que puede parecer irrelevante puede ser un faro de esperanza para un adolescente que nunca antes se había visto en pantalla. El análisis cinematográfico es erudito, pero lo que hace que cada testimonio sea tan poderoso es el impacto emocional de cada persona: podemos pasarnos horas hablando de cómo contar una historia, pero se puede discutir con una persona que te cuenta cómo una película cambió su vida; pase lo que pase, ese momento es real, y su poder es contagioso.
Disclosure es una experiencia enriquecedora y conmovedora, y su mérito reside en lo que debería ser una verdad evidente: si quieres saber si una obra de ficción es buena representación, pregunta a aquellos que pretende representar.
