If we don’t get that many chances nowadays to see a comedy, there are even fewer opportunities to watch a farce. Barb and Star are here to fill that gap with an unabashedly old-fashioned cheeriness.
The titular characters are two middle-aged mall employees, best friends and roommates, who one day receive the call to adventure of their lifetimes in the form of… a brochure for a seaside resort in Florida. Going on a trip to the beach is the single craziest and most exotic thing either of them have done, and to add to that as soon as they land they just happen to get involved in a mass-murder plot with spies and assassins and deadly mosquitos, which for all I know is a common risk in Florida (I haven’t been).
Barb and Star are played by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, respectively; in addition to having worked together for decades as a comedic duo, they famously co-wrote the trend-setting Bridesmaids before also writing this one. Without a doubt, their palpable rapport carries the entire film, as their every interaction feels like a well-greased double act. The Judd Apatow comedy style of getting into long, improvised conversations riffing on misunderstandings and double entendres, which works well sometimes (as in Bridesmaids) but can sometimes feel awkward and unfunny, here goes smoothly thanks to Wiig and Mumolo’s character-based synchronicity. The writing is at times only mildly funny rather than hilarious, but they elevate it, as you can tell when other actors aren’t quite as successful at it.
The film also features a rare comedic appearance by Jamie Dornan, who is way funnier as a lovelorn assassin with his own delirious musical number than his previous roles (like the serial killer in The Fall) led me to expect. There are also a few choice cameos from SNL and Apatow regulars, and Wiig pulls double-duty playing a photophobic, commitment-averse villainess that I am convinced was written for Cate Blanchett.
The comedy in the film deftly mixes slapstick, improv, sight gags and buddy movie staples, and while it doesn’t achieve as many truly laugh-out-loud moments as I might have hoped, it’s a thoroughly entertaining fever dream notable above all else for its sheer joy. The screen is awash with bright colors, literally everybody seems to be having a blast, any scene is liable to end in a musical number, and even when they’re being silly the characters aren’t looked at with cruelty but with complicity. A grand old time.

Cuando seguimos padeciendo una sequía grave de comedias, Barb y Star acuden a nuestro rescate con alegría e inocencia.
Las dos mujeres que prestan su nombre a la película son empleadas de un centro comercial, amigas del alma y compañeras de piso, que un buen día descubren un objeto que les cambiará la vida: el folleto de un resort de playa en Florida. Irse de vacaciones a la playa es lo más alocado y aventurero que han hecho en su vida, y por si fuera poco nada más llegar interfieren con una trama de destrucción masiva con espías, asesinos y mosquitos letales de por medio (no he estado en Florida, así que igual allí es normal).
A Barb y a Star las interpretan Annie Mumolo y Kristen Wiig, respectivamente; además de haber trabajado juntas durante décadas como dúo cómico, las dos fueron las guionistas de la pionera La boda de mi mejor amiga antes de escribir también esta película. Sin duda alguna, la química entre las dos es la base de toda la obra, porque todas sus interacciones despiden la familiaridad de un número cómico bien ensayado. El estilo de comedia de Judd Apatow que consiste en meterse en largas y entrecortadas conversaciones improvisadas que juegan con malentendidos y dobles sentidos, que a veces funciona bien (como en La boda de mi mejor amiga) pero que a veces se hace incómodo y poco gracioso, aquí se emplea con suavidad gracias a la sintonía de los personajes de Wiig y Mumolo. A veces el guión es solo entretenido en lugar de gracioso, pero ellas lo elevan, y se nota cuando a otros actores no se les da tan bien.
La película también cuenta con una inesperada actuación cómica de Jamie Dornan, quien tiene mucha mejor vis cómica en su papel de asesino enamorado con número musical propio de lo que me esperaba pensando en sus papeles anteriores (como el asesino en serie de The Fall). Naturalmente, no faltan cameos de actores habituales de Saturday Night Live y Judd Apatow, y Wiig trabaja doble haciendo de una villana fotofóbica y reacia al compromiso que estoy convencido inventaron para Cate Blanchett.
La comedia del filme mezcla improvisación, humor visual, comedia física y clásicos de buddy movie, y aunque no me indujera tantas risas como hubiera deseado, es toda una experiencia febril que por encima de todo resalta por su alegría. La pantalla reluce con colores brillantes, tiene pinta de que literalmente todo el mundo se lo está pasando en grande, cualquier escena puede acabar en canción, y hasta cuando hacen el tonto a los personajes no se los trata con crueldad, sino con complicidad. Un respiro de diversion.
